Our Land

The Land We Need for the Water We Use

To ensure drinking water quality, watershed and aquifer lands need to be preserved. At the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority, our mission is to provide our customers with a reliable supply of high-quality water. As stewards to more than 26,000 acres of land, we manage our land and water supplies to fulfill our mission, now and in the future. In this area, we explain our land policy which includes why we acquire and sell land.

We created a brochure, The Land We Need for the Water We Use, which explains our land policy, including why we acquire and sell land. Please see the link below to download a PDF version of the brochure. The content of the brochure is also presented here in corresponding web pages in 5 sections: 1) Water Quality Is More Than a Reservoir Issue; 2) Water Quality Is a Land Issue; 3) Water Quality Is Managing Land Assets; 4) Map showing land we want to protect and land we want to sell; and 5) Timeline of Land & Easement Purchases and Land Sales—1980-2006

Regional Water Authority Land Use Plan

Today, the Authority owns more than 26,000 acres of land in 20 towns of the Regional Water District. By law, the Authority was required to develop a land use plan subject to approval by the Representative Policy Board (RPB). The Plan, originally approved by the RPB in 1983, was updated by the Authority in 1996. The Plan may be amended, but only after approval by the RPB. No land may be sold without the approval of the RPB. Due to the critical information contained in the Land Use Plan, copies of this document are available for reading at the Office of the Regional Water Authority, 90 Sargent Drive in New Haven.
