Multiple Scam Attempts Over Past Two Weeks For Immediate Release July 29, 2015

NEW HAVEN, July 29, 2015 - The South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority (RWA) is asking area residents to be suspicious if someone comes to their door claiming to be from the water company and wanting to enter their home. The Regional Water Authority makes appointments with residents if the company needs to enter a home.

“Customers should be suspicious of anyone who comes to their door claiming to be from the Regional Water Authority requesting to check the pipes, water pressure or valves or get a water sample,” said Regional Water Authority Police Captain Paul M. Schilling. “All Regional Water Authority personnel carry an employee photo identification card and wear clothing with the Regional Water Authority logo. If the person at your door doesn’t show you an employee identification card and give you time to examine it, do not let them in your home.” The customer should also see a company car or truck with the Regional Water Authority logo parked outside.

The latest scam attempt was in West Haven on Wednesday, July 29. A person, described as a white male with dark hair, no facial hair, a brown hat and brown shirt, told the homeowner that the water company owed him money and asked him to make change for a hundred dollar bill. The person had an ID card, but the homeowner was not able to inspect it. The homeowner refused to make change, and the scammer left. Other recent scams included callers trying to scare laundromats into making payments using pre-paid debit cards by threatening to shut off their water within the next half hour, and a man posing as a water company employee saying that the residents had leaks, and he needed to come into the homes to check the faucets.

If a customer has doubts about someone showing up at their home, they should immediately call the Authority’s Customer Service Department at 203-562-4020 or the local police department.
