HazWaste Central

HazWaste Central is co-sponsored by the Regional Water Authority and the South Central Regional Council of Governments. Visiting HazWaste Central is convenient and easy because visitors never have to leave their cars, and all hazwaste is off-loaded by professionals. HazWaste Central helps residents in member towns protect local waterways and natural environments by providing a location for the appropriate and safe disposal of household hazardous waste.

HazWaste Central is provided at no cost to residents whose towns are active members of the HazWaste Central Municipal Planning Committee only. If you are a resident of a town that is not a member of the Hazwaste Central Planning Committee, please inquire about waste disposal options at ask.hazwaste@rwater.com

HazWaste Central Collection Events

HazWaste Central holds weekly collection events every Saturday during the HazWaste season from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at The Regional Water Authority headquarters located at 90 Sargent Drive, New Haven, CT. The 2024 HazWaste season begins on Saturday, May 18, and ends on Saturday, October 26. Satellite collections are held in select member towns. Please check individual town websites for information on satellite collections.

What if I want my containers back after the contents have been emptied?

Notify the HazWaste staff unloading your vehicle that you want to keep your gasoline or other container, and they will return them to you after decanting.

Do I need to arrive at the collection event at a certain time?

HazWaste Central collections are held from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Residents are served at the time of their arrival.

What should I do with hazardous waste during the HazWaste off-season?

You may use https://www.paintcare.org/states/connecticut/ to find a disposal location for paint needs. Contact your local transfer station and scrap metal businesses for the disposal of certain materials that would be accepted in the associated locations. Lastly, store your waste until the HazWaste Central season reconvenes in May and be one of the first to take advantage of the collection services in the Spring.

Are collection events held rain or shine?

HazWaste Central Collections are held rain or shine. Staff members will work efficiently to unload residential vehicles for inclement weather to have the least impact on the collection event. You can check rwater.com for an up-to-date list of collection event dates.
