RWA Delays Opening of HazWaste Central Due To COVID-19 Pandemic

May 07, 2020

The Regional Water Authority (RWA) will delay opening HazWaste Central until May 30, 2020, in order to protect customers, employees and volunteers. The RWA will continue to monitor the presence of COVID-19 in Connecticut and will announce any further delays deemed necessary. When HazWaste Central does open, measures will be in place to encourage social distancing for the protection of those present on collection days.

Participants at HazWaste Central are able to have their household hazardous waste disposed of without leaving their vehicles. All waste is registered in advance and unloaded from vehicles by professionals. To encourage further social distancing during the 2020 season, the RWA will ask that all participants sign-in online rather than using paper forms provided by a HazWaste volunteer.

HazWaste Central typically opens in mid-May and it operates on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. until noon through the end of October. Residents of participating towns are able to bring their household hazardous waste products to the HazWaste Central facility, located at the RWA’s headquarters at 90 Sargent Drive in New Haven, for free and environmentally-friendly disposal. The HazWaste Central member communities are Bethany, Branford, East Haven, Fairfield, Guilford, Hamden, Madison, Meriden, Milford, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, Orange, Wallingford, West Haven and Woodbridge.

More information on HazWaste Central can be found on the RWA’s website. Anyone with questions about HazWaste Central or the safe disposal of household hazardous waste is encouraged to contact the RWA by phone at 203-401-2712 or by email at The RWA is also sharing videos and tips on managing household hazardous waste on its Facebook page.
