RWA Lifts Precautionary Boil Water Advisory For Several Streets In Hamden

May 21, 2022

New Haven, CT – The Regional Water Authority (RWA) has canceled the precautionary boil water advisory for the following streets in Hamden: High Rock Rd, Hill St, Laura Rd, W Shepard Ave, Paradise Ave, Heathridge Rd, Norman Rd, Sterling Pl, Laurel View Ter, Dunbar Hill Rd, and Chauncy Rd.

Residents living on these streets no longer need to boil their water after an initial precautionary notice was issued Thursday afternoon following a 16” water main break. Repairs were completed Thursday evening and service was restored.

Out of an abundance of caution, residents have been advised to boil their tap water until a complete cycle of water-quality testing could be administered. Water-quality testing submitted to the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) today has confirmed that tap water meets all regulatory standards and is safe for human consumption. The RWA tested water samples from multiple sites in the affected area and has verified that there is no risk of water contamination from the loss of pressure in the distribution system. Therefore, the RWA has ended the bottled water distribution.

“Protecting the health and safety of our customers is our highest priority,” said Tom Barger, RWA Manager of Water Quality. “We understand actions like these can be very disruptive, but we will always put our customers’ safety first. We sincerely appreciate our customers’ patience while we took necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the tap water we deliver.”

Affected customers are being notified about the canceling of the precautionary boil water notice by the RWA’s CodeRED automatic phone notification system. Customers can register for CodeRED notifications at https://www.rwater.com/customer-care/register-for-codered.

Customers who have not used their water supply during this precautionary boil water advisory are advised to flush their internal and external plumbing by running water through their system for several minutes. This includes interior and exterior faucets, showers, water, and ice dispensers, and any water treatment units. To flush a residential water system, run a cold water faucet located at the highest point in the house (for example, a second-floor bathtub) for 5 to 10 minutes to clear out internal plumbing followed by running individual fixtures.

For more information on how to flush your home water system, please follow DPH recommendations: https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/Departments-and-Agencies/DPH/dph/drinking_water/pdf/Boil-Water-Notice-Concluded_residential.pdf.
